4 Different Types of Dental Crowns

Many who decide to get a dental crown to restore the size, shape and function of a damaged tooth are confused when it comes to choosing the right type of dental crown. By having a better understanding of each option, however, you can make an informed decision as to which material is right for you.

Four types of dental crowns

There are four main types of dental crowns to choose from. The exact material a dentist recommends is dependent on several factors, including where they will place the dental crown, how much pressure the tooth receives and of course, the patient’s preference. The following are the four types of dental crowns available to patients.

Ceramic

Patients often decide on a ceramic dental crown for the more visible front teeth. They are made using a porcelain based material, which bonds well and blends in with the natural color of teeth. In many instances, ceramic dental crowns are an alternative to dental veneers or bonding. The only drawback to a ceramic dental crown is that they are not as durable as various other options, which makes them preferable on teeth that do not have to endure as much pressure on a daily basis.

Porcelain fused to metal

Many consider this form of dental crown to be a balance between the strength of a metal alloy crown and the appearance of a porcelain dental crown, a sort of "best of both worlds" approach. Essentially, a porcelain fused to metal dental crown is a porcelain crown on top of a metal structure that helps to improve the strength and durability. A dentist may recommend this form of dental crown if the patient needs extra protection for the tooth, but improving the appearance of the tooth is also a top priority for the patient.

Metal alloy

A metal alloy dental crown is likely to be applied to teeth further back in the mouth, such as premolars and molars. In this instance, a dentist may recommend a crown made of a very durable non-noble metal base that helps to restore the function of severely damaged teeth. However, a metal alloy crown may not blend in as well with the other natural teeth. While this is not a huge concern with teeth that are in the back of the mouth, they are likely not the best option for crowns on more visible teeth.

Gold

A gold dental crown is another option that provides excellent strength to the tooth and is very durable. It is constructed of a gold base with copper and other metals mixed in as well. This type of dental crown is best if the color of the tooth is not an issue and the strength of the dental crown is the only concern. With this form of crown, the patient does not have to worry about further damage to their existing tooth as long as they properly care for it.
