Best Sources for Fluoride

Fluoride is an important mineral present in our body, it is mostly in the form of calcium fluoride in the bone and teeth. The mineral finds many uses: it is used for treating the causes of bone loss, for preventing tooth decay, etc. In the U.S., fluoride was added to water sources in the 1940s for preventing tooth decay. Over the years, sodium fluoride has become a central ingredient in different dental products. It is also present in processed foods, bottled teas, Teflon pans, pharmaceuticals, etc.

While fluoride is important for maintaining health, excessive amounts of the mineral can have a negative effect on health. Excessive quantities of the mineral can cause dental fluorosis (a defect of tooth enamel) in children during the first eight years of their life.

The weight of a person determines how much fluoride they will need, states the National Library of Medicine. For children, this amount is much less than that of an adult.

Sources of fluoride

So, what are the main sources of fluoride? Here are some of the main sources of the mineral:

Tea and coffee

Lemon-black tea typically has a higher amount of fluoride. A water-based brewed coffee of the same amount will have almost the same amount of fluoride as the tea, while a water-based decaffeinated coffee on the same-sized serving will have much less.

Milk

Lowfat buttermilk has a lot more fluoride than that of regular whole or nonfat milk. It is best to consume milk with a lower fluoride content because there are other things in milk that are essential to the body.

Grape Juice

A 16 oz glass of unsweetened grape juice contains high levels of fluoride. The quantity is for both bottled and canned juice that does have any added ascorbic acid.

Bread

Commercially-prepared white bread contains some amounts of fluoride in it, however, it is not too much. Rye bread specifically has higher levels of fluoride in it.

Fruits and Vegetables

Almost all fruits and vegetables are acidic and have small levels of fluoride in them. The amount of fluoride in most is not enough to harm a person's health. Fruits and vegetables are essential to a person's overall health.

Water

Almost all tap water contains high levels of fluoride. While it should be better regulated, it is sadly not. Excessive amounts of fluoride can cause severe damage to the teeth and the body as a whole. It's best to drink water that has been tested for fluoride.

Wines

Wine tends to be very acidic while also containing fluoride. Excessive amounts of acid and fluoride can both be harmful to the teeth and the body. Wine tends to stain the teeth as well. It's best to limit the amount of wine that is consumed.

Track your fluoride intake

By keeping track of your daily fluoride intake, you can ensure that you don’t exceed these limits. Certain small amounts of fluoride can be greatly beneficial to a person's teeth because it cleanses and ensures that bacteria isn't growing. However, a person should watch their fluoride intake to ensure that an unhealthy amount isn't consumed.
