Kids’ Preventive Dentistry: Dental Caries Is a Serious Childhood Disease

With preventive dentistry, there is a lower risk of your child dealing with dental caries. Otherwise known as tooth decay, this can cause some serious health issues. Even if you provide your child with healthy food and make them brush several times a day, you should still talk to their pediatric dentist about preventive care. As a loving mom or dad, you want to do everything possible to protect your kids.

Is preventive dentistry really necessary?

The answer to this question is an astounding yes. Even with a watchful eye, kids will sneak sugary snacks. Kids also avoid brushing as much as possible: That is just being a kid. With preventive dentistry, parents have one less thing to worry about. Both in the short and long term, this helps protect children from some very serious childhood illnesses.

When sitting down for a consultation, the dentist will explain why preventive dentistry is important. They will also go over the recommended treatments. Together, the parents, dentist and the child can agree on a plan. With everyone onboard, life becomes a little bit easier. As for the treatment types, the following represents what most pediatric dentists suggest.

1. Sealant

The first recommendation comes in the form of a dental sealant. Similar to plastic, the dentist applies a clear material to the child’s teeth. What this does is lessen the amount of food that becomes stuck in between the teeth. It also protects the enamel. As a result, the risk of a kid developing dental caries diminishes. In other words, a sealant works as a protective barrier in the fight against cavities.

2. Fluoride treatment

Although fluoride remains a highly controversial topic, it is among the most recommended treatments as part of preventive dentistry. In this case, the dentist applies fluoride to the teeth. With that complete, the teeth become stronger. In fact, a fluoride treatment makes it easier for tooth enamel to battle bacteria and acid — both known causes of decay.

3. Cleanings

Scheduled cleanings are another vital aspect of preventive dentistry for kids. At least twice a year, a child should go to the dentist for a professional cleaning. Not only does this remove tartar and plaque, but it helps brighten the teeth. Staying on top of this helps prevent dental caries.

4. Brushing and flossing

As soon as a child’s teeth erupt, a parent can use a soft cloth to keep them clean. The dentist will make several recommendations, starting with kids brushing their teeth two to three times per day, preferably after every meal and snacks. By the age of two, parents need to teach their kids how to floss. When combined with brushing, that makes dental caries less of a concern.

5. Avoidance

For overall preventive dentistry, there are things that both parents and kids should avoid. As an example, an infant should never nap or sleep at night with a bottle. Any sugary liquid pools inside of the mouth, which promotes dental caries. Sippy cups are another problem for this same reason.

Protect your child

The way to protect your child’s oral health is by adhering to a preventive dentistry plan. Sit down with them along with the dentist to gain a full understanding of what that means. While dental caries may not seem like a big deal, it can lead to serious health issues. Therefore, you need to become a part of the solution by following the dentist’s recommendations and monitoring your child at home.
