Laser Dentistry and Sensitive Teeth

If you or someone you know struggles with dentin hypersensitivity, laser dentistry might be the solution to your problem. Tooth sensitivity can be incredibly painful and can influence your ability to participate in normal everyday activities like eating and drinking.

Do you suffer from tooth sensitivity?

Tooth sensitivity, also referred to by the National Center for Biotechnical Information as “dentin hypersensitivity,” is pain in the bony tissue of a tooth, also known as dentin. When this tissue is exposed to pressure or other elements, it can cause pain. For instance, you may also experience dentin hypersensitivity in response to certain temperatures or different foods and beverages you consume. Thanks to modern technology, dentists can use lasers in order to help reduce or even eliminate this tooth sensitivity, easing your tooth pain and helping your peace of mind.

While exposure to laser light and its warmth might seem like it would be troublesome for those with dentin hypersensitivity, the good news is that even if you have sensitive teeth, you can still have a smooth, pain-free experience with laser dentistry.

If you are tired of dealing with the pain that comes from this condition, you should talk to your dentist about laser treatment options.

What causes teeth sensitivity?

The major cause of hypersensitivity is dentin exposure. This tissue is typically not exposed, because it is covered and protected by enamel and gum tissue. When your enamel is worn down due to plaque or over-brushing or gum disease like gingivitis wears away at your gums, the dentin is exposed. This means it is able to interact with different elements and can be affected by the temperature and pressure applied to it.

Dentin contains tubules that run from the enamel layer of a tooth all the way to its center. When unprotected, these tubules allow cold, heat and pressure to affect the core of the tooth, causing pain. The more dentin that is open without protection within a person’s tooth, the greater the chances that the person will experience dentin hypersensitivity.

How laser dentistry can reduce hypersensitivity

Laser dentistry is an effective method of reducing hypersensitivity. The light emitted from the laser interacts with the bony tissue and closes up the tubules that affect the tooth’s core. With these tubules closed, the exposed dentin will not be as receptive to the elements that cause sensitivity.

Laser dentistry can also help remove the damaged tissue and bacteria that cause gingivitis and leads to this dentin exposure. The laser can cut into the gum tissue, allowing the dentist to get rid of the harmful bacteria and protect your gums and teeth from further damage.

If you find yourself hesitant to eat certain items or avoiding certain areas of your mouth when you brush your teeth each day, then you might be suffering from dentin hypersensitivity. Make a point to talk to your dentist at your next appointment and discuss possible laser treatment options.
