Teeth Straightening Without Traditional Braces

Teeth straightening is used to correct flaws like crowded teeth, crooked teeth, bite problems and gaps between the teeth. Even though using traditional braces to straighten teeth is still one of the most popular options, it is not convenient for people who want to straighten their teeth discreetly.

How to straighten teeth without traditional braces

Some of the teeth straightening options that do not require traditional braces include:

Retainers

The three types of retainers used for teeth straightening are:

  • Fixed retainers: These retainers are attached to teeth using a dental cement on the inner surface of the teeth to prevent them from moving out of place, straightening the patient’s teeth and bite at the same time. Even though the fixed retainer is effective, it can only be removed by a dentist, which is a drawback for some people.
  • Hawley retainers: These are the most commonly used type of retainer for crooked teeth. Unlike the fixed retainers, they can be removed, which allows the patient to brush their teeth and eat without worrying about damaging their retainer. These retainers are customized for each patient based on the dental impression made by the dentist and can be used to straighten teeth in the upper and lower arches of the mouth.
  • Removable plastic retainers: These are usually made from clear plastic and are used to hold teeth in position and prevent them from the wear of grinding. However, they are not very durable and get worn down quickly, especially if the patient grinds their teeth.

Clear aligners

Even though clear aligners are made from a plastic material, they are not to be confused with plastic retainers, which are not as durable. Using clear aligners to straighten teeth involves getting a 3D scan of the mouth, which is used to create a customized tray of aligners to straighten the teeth.

The impression is sent to a dental laboratory where a tray of aligners will be created to straighten the teeth gradually. Each aligner is to be used for two weeks and discarded after. Once the aligner has been discarded, the next set in the tray has to be used for another two weeks before getting discarded for the next one. Aligners are very popular for people who want to straighten their teeth discreetly.

Appliances

Dentists use devices like the Herbst appliance for teeth straightening by fixing problems with the jaw. The appliance enables the lower jaw to move in a forward direction, allowing the upper and lower jaws to meet, correcting the patient’s bite in the process. It is used continuously for a year to achieve the desired results.

Palatal expanders

These are used to straighten children’s teeth if an orthodontist determines that their mouth is too small for their adult teeth. The expander is inserted into the child’s mouth to widen the arch of the upper teeth, creating room for teeth to move into their correct position.

Conclusion

Teeth straightening does not require having to wear traditional braces anymore because there are more alternatives to choose from. If you have crooked teeth and are unhappy about the appearance of your teeth but do not want to get traditional braces, schedule an appointment with your dentist to go over your treatment options.
