Why Do My Teeth Turn Yellow?

Over the years, various studies have shown that a confident, attractive smile can make you stand out in a crowd and leave a lasting impression on others. Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and it’s also the feature they’re most likely to remember when remembering your face. If you find yourself wondering “Why do my teeth turn yellow?” and “How can I improve the whiteness of my teeth?” our team is here to help!

Here at Charvet Dental Center, we know how frustrating it can be to feel that your oral health is holding you back from realizing your true potential. If you’ve spent years feeling self-conscious about your smile, our teeth whitening solutions could be just what you’re looking for! Let’s take a closer look at what causes teeth to yellow and the options we offer to improve your teeth whiteness.

What causes yellow teeth?

There are quite a few reasons you might be dealing with yellow teeth. One reason is that the white layer of enamel on the outside of the teeth gets thinner over time, revealing the more yellow-brown substance underneath. This is called dentin and can cause your teeth to look more yellow than white.

Teeth are also prone to staining. Things like red wine, coffee, tobacco, and even some medications can cause stains to appear, diminishing the whiteness of your smile. This is why at-home oral hygiene is so important!

Can yellow teeth be whitened?

One of the most common concerns we see in our Metairie office is that patients’ teeth are too yellow to be whitened. Many people doubt that they’ll see results from whitening products and are hesitant to even give the process a try. The good news is that you can get a brighter, whiter smile even if you’ve had yellow teeth for years!

There are a variety of solutions to help you whiten your smile, both at home and in a dental office. Our team has the expertise necessary to help you get the beautiful smile of your dreams!

What whitening options are available?

At Charvet Dental Center, we look forward to helping you achieve the smile you deserve. That’s why we offer two effective whitening services for your convenience.

Zoom Teeth Whitening

Our Zoom! in-office whitening system can remove stains and lighten your teeth up to eight shades in just an hour. This innovative whitening technique only requires a single appointment to see the beautiful results you’re looking for. Zoom! Whitening is the ideal solution for those who feel they may not be able to keep the commitment of wearing whitening trays for long periods.

The first step is a dental examination to ensure that your teeth are free from gum disease, cavities, or an infection. We want you to be in great oral health to prevent any unnecessary sensitivity. Once you’re cleared for treatment we will clean and polish your teeth to ensure that the whitening gel is being placed on clean teeth rather than plaque build-up. Next, we’ll protect your lips with a special lip cream to avoid irritation before placing a retractor in your mouth to pull back your lips, exposing your teeth.

After this, you’ll bite down and rest your tongue on a cup that’s placed in your mouth. We’ll use a shade guide to determine what your final goals are and how your smile will look once treatment is complete. After taking a photo of your teeth, we’ll place a bib around your face and give you protective eyewear. Finally, we’ll place a protective gel on your teeth and brush on the whitening gel. Your dentist will use a special laser to activate this gel and give you a brighter, whiter smile!

At-home Whitening

This is the perfect fit for those who want to achieve a whiter smile on their schedule. Our Metairie office will provide you with prescription gel and customized whitening trays. Each day, you’ll put some of the gel into the trays and wear them for the directing amount of time. You’ll typically need to wear them for about an hour per day, but the exact time will vary with each patient. Our at-home whitening treatment typically yields results within two weeks of starting treatment.

Both our in-office and at-home whitening services will provide you with the same level of whitening, they just take slightly different time commitments.

Maintaining a whiter smile

After completing whitening treatment with Charvet Dental Center, it’s essential to maintain a proper oral hygiene routine. Since foods and drinks we encounter every day can leave stains, you should always remember to brush twice a day (and after meals when you can!)

Following in-office whitening with our Zoom! whitening treatment, we’ll provide you with custom trays and whitening gel to take home for any touch-ups you may need. A touch-up gel is always available for either treatment method if you wish to give your smile a refresher!
